DAY 1: SPRINT QUALIFYING

The Australian team were keen to get business underway at the 2007 World Orienteering Championships being held in Kiev, Ukraine. Today was the first of the qualifying races with 4 out of the 7 Australian competitors qualifying for the Sprint Final (to be held on 26th of August). Australia is the defending world champion at the Womens Sprint Event, with Hanny Allston (TAS) setting the standard as Australia's highest performer in HeatB.

Many of the Australian world championship team head out for an early morning jog lead by Brett Weihart (mens coach).

The guys head out over the Dnipro river bridge.

Julian Dent (NSW) and Anna Sheldon (QLD) pull a few moves.

Heading out to the Sprint qualifying via a)metro & bus or b)private car.

Julian Dent was Australia's sole male qualifer to sunday's Sprint Final.

The Mens Qualifying heats were super tight with 1min gap between the qualifying times in each of the heats. Julian Dent had a solid run to qualify comfortably. Rob Walter lost 30secs at the begining of his race but gave everything to try and close the gap but it was too much, just missing qualifying in 16th position. As for myself (Troy de Haas) I had a very clean run and looked like cruising into qualifying just 10secs behind the best time of the day. Near to the end of my race I over ran a control to lose a whopping 1:30 min aprox. and it was game over in 20th position.

The Womens Qualifying heats were a little more interesting with upto 2:30min between the qualifying times on each heat. Australia had 4 women competitors due to our world championship status. Grace Elson had little problems qualifying in 12th position. Hanny Allston started out with 10times world champion Simone Niggli to show her class in 3rd position, whilst in the same heat Anna Sheldon was not having a good day back in 27th position. Kathryn Ewels back into world champs after a few years break overcame nerves to qualify in 10th position.

Sprint Qualifying Results (top15 qualify)
Men A: 1 Peter Oberg (SWE) 12:53, 20 Troy de Haas (AUS) +1:38 NOT QUALIFIED

Hi kids!
Sounds like its all action stations in kiev. Can't say I envy you running around in that heat. Good luck to the classic runners (go REUBS!!). Jo I hope those savage dogs are keeping their distance, just pretend they are all like Kipketer. Rob I spoke with Al last night and she is sitting with her legs crossed tightly...and Shep you would be so proud cos Makhaya is working on his bowling and threw a ball properly last night for the first time. Good job on the blog Troy and good job qualifying Julian and super girls
